A major role of the GUM clinics is offering an HIV test. Only you can decide if you want to take the test. HIV testing is not automatically carried out at GUM clinics. Clinics are now more likely to suggest that you have an HIV test, especially if you have recently had another STI. Don’t be worried; it’s becoming more normal to test for HIV. You can also ask if you wish to be tested for HIV.
Trained counsellors are available to help you make the decision. You will not be forced to make any decisions about HIV testing, (you won’t be forced into anything you don’t want.) You can just go along to talk through the options. An HIV test is a blood test. You will receive counselling before the test is taken, and when the result comes back. This is normally about a week later, although some clinics offer a same day HIV testing/results service. This has to be booked in advance.
GUM clinics are all completely confidential.Hospital trusts have their own policies governing confidentiality, as do GP's. You can check out confidentiality with the clinic before you go.
The clinical staff who take the tests and give the results are trained and experienced in supporting people who have received either a positive or a negative result. GUM clinics have trained Health Advisors and Counsellors on hand to discuss any issues surrounding sexual health. They can advise on safer sex and also help identify any risks of STIs or HIV in how we have sex.
After receiving the test result you will also be told about the other services around Scotland that can offer you on-going support of all kinds to help you.
