Sexually Transmitted Infections

 

As some STI's, including HIV, can be without immediate symptoms, sexual health screening on a regular basis is a good way to make sure everything is okay and any infections present are treated immediately.


Gonorrhoea
A bacterial Infection in the mouth, throat, bum or penis.
Symptoms: Pain when pissing or shitting. Can have small white or yellow discharge from end of cock.
Sexual Activity: Unprotected anal sex. Oral sex.
Treatment: Antibiotics



Syphillis
If left undiagnosed can lead to complications.
Symptoms: Without Symptons in 60% of infections. May present genital ulcers or body rash
Sexual Activity: Oral sex, genital and anal contact. Not necessarily by penetrative sex
Treatment: Usually penicillin or alternative if allergic to penicillin



Hepatitis A
Viral infection affecting the liver.
Symptoms: Can cause fever, nausea, fatigue, weight loss and distaste of tobacco, alcohol and fatty foods.
Sexual Activity: licking arse (rimming), Scat (contact with shit), Possibly watersports (pissing games).
Treatment: short course of injections.An easy injection can stop you catching this one. Talk to your clinic about getting innoculated.



Hepatitis B
This is a more easily caught hepatitis which can seriously affect the liver.
Symptoms: May show none at all. Yellowing of skin and eyes, fatigue, loss of appetite, stomach pains. Dark urine, pale faces.
Sexual Activity: Unprotected anal sex. Oral sex. Occasionally kissing
Treatment: Short course of injections. An easy injection can stop you catching this one. Talk to your clinic about getting innoculated.



Herpes
A viral infection which also causes cold sores around the mouth. Most infectious when sores are visible.
Symptoms: Can be none at all or be very mild. Includes small blisters and sores on genitals or bum area. Flu like aches and pains
Sexual Activity: Direct contact from mouth to mouth, mouth to genital,
genital to genital during infectious period.
Treatment: Sores treated with Acyclovir in drug or cream form. Helps shorten outbreaks but does not destroy virus.



Genital Warts
Viral infection affecting bum and genitals.
Symptoms: Carriers may show no symptoms themselves but can transmit to others. Warts maybe visible as small painless lumps.
Sexual Activity: Direct skin to skin contact with carrier virus.
Treatment: Course of treatments ranging from a series of applications to freezing and a variety of painless surgical techniques.

 

Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)

Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is a the newest STI in Scotland. It is causedby the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis .
Symptoms in mem include: Rectal pain, discharge and bloody stools. Also typically general malaise, and painful and swollen lymph glands in the groin.

Treatment: Course of antibiotics.


Urethritis
A range of bacterial infections affecting water passage in the penis.
Symptoms: Includes Chlamydia. Usually minor stinging and burning sensations when pissing or some discharge from the end of the penis. May have none at all.
Sexual Activity: Anal sex. Oral sex.
Treatment: Course of antibiotics relevant to the type of bacteria causing the infection.

 

 

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a bacterium which affects the genitals and sometimes the eyes. It causes a form of Urethritis, (see above,) in men. Chlamydia is passed on through anal, oral and vaginal sex.
Symptoms: Sometimes no or very little signs of infection. Men may get white cloudy discharge from the penis and a burning sensation when passing urine.

Treatment: Short course of antibiotics.

Proctitis
A range of bacterial infections causing inflammation in the bum.
Symptoms: Can be none or very mild as follows: Diarrheoa, Mucus in stools and pain in or around the bum area.
Sexual Activity: Oral, anal and genital contact. Using dildos and sex toys.
Treatment: Usually a course of antibiotics relevant to the bacterial infection.



Crab Lice (crabs)
A small parasite that settles on pubic hair and can spread to body hair.
Symptoms: Itching in pubic area. Visible minute eggs or tiny insects in pubic and body hair.
Sexual Activity: Direct body contact and can also be acquired from bed linen or towels.
Treatment: A lotion applied to all hair areas beneath the neck and left on for several hours.



Scabies
A small parasite which burrows into the skin.
Symptoms: Can be located on any skin area. Intense itch often worse at night or after bathing. Heat rash type lumps.
Sexual Activity: Easily contracted by skin to skin contact or infected linen or clothing.
Treatment: Application of lotion across all areas below the neck particularly finger webs and toes.
